    Sentosa Golf Club (The Serapong)

    • 27 Bukit Manis Road
    • Singapore, 099892 Singapore

Designed by world-renowned golf course designer Ronald Fream, The Serapong Course was opened in 1982 and measures 6,493 meters from the championship tee. A challenging par-72, it is one of the top five championship courses in Asia and home of the prestigious Barclays Singapore Open.

In 2007, The Serapong Course underwent an impressive S$12 million upgrade under the guidance of Andrew Johnston then Vice President of the Bates Golf Design Group. The refurbishment included both course design and greens technology.

In addition to incorporating SubAir and PermOPore into the greens, the revamped Serapong Course boasts a new configuration of water hazards and bunker complexes. The course's yardage was lengthened from 6,493 to 6,675 meters, and the greens were re-contoured and are now larger and faster. With its trademark mounds and undulating terrain, two large lakes with stone-lined walls and breathtaking scenery, Andrew enhanced Ron's use of the Singapore harbor as a backdrop to accentuate play.

To ensure a consistent playing surface, many areas of the course, which were previously prone to foreign grass and weeds, were removed and re-established with pure strains of turf. The three grass types on the course are Tiffeagle on the greens, Paspalum Sea Isle 2000 on the tee boxes and Zoysia on the fairways.

The Serapong Course was awarded the "Number 1 Championship Golf course in Asia" by Asian Golf Monthly in 2007 and "Best Golf Course in Singapore" by Golf Digest in 2009, further cementing its position as one of the top courses in the country and the region.

The women working at the reception were extremely nice, most of the staff as well. The golf course is beautiful but as a single player it was not the best of experience because you either had to wait or were rushed because of being between two flights. After asking to be joined up with other players, which the ladies at the reception went above and beyond to make happen, the last round played  became a great experience.

You could not fault the golf course, or the staff even on the day the women’s tour was starting on the Tanjong course that same day, my only complaint was the rental clubs for $85, they did not even provide a full set, only a driver no other woods and no gap wedges, which was really poor for such a prestigious golf club, when mentioned to several staff all they could do was smile and laugh, if this could be passed into management that would be good

The course and club were beautiful. It otherwise would have been a 10, but I was a disappointed in that (1) the started okay'd an earlier start time, then canceled it, and then okay'd it again, which then left us sitting at the practice range unsure of when we could start, and the caddie was useless; (2) the caddie smoked continuously throughout the round without permission and (3) the caddie demanded a tip after the round, and even though I was going to give him one, being asked for a tip for a specific amount ($50) was a bit unseemly to me.

Overall, a really positive experience. The course is in wonderful shape, as you would expect from a World Top 100 course that had recently hosted the Singapore Open. Tees, fairways and bunkers all in top condition in a challenging but enjoyable layout. Wind blowing increased the challenge!

Two reasons why I gave only an 8/10:

    1. Green conditioning - I was disappointed to arrive at the green after playing my first hole to find the green quite sandy after being recently cored. I understand the reasons for the club needing to do this job, however my disappointment with this is due to the fact I was not informed of the green condition prior to the commencement of my round. In my view, the condition of the greens are a huge portion of the experience of playing a Championship layout like The Serapong and I feel that, while being incredibly lucky to have access to such a course, when you pay a premium price to play on a premium course and it is not in a premium condition, the offer of a discounted rate should be considered.

    2. Customer Service - I found the service level from certain frontline staff to be lacking, firstly on arrival at the bag drop desk at the front of the clubhouse and then again from front office staff. Maybe I just had overly high expectations because of the reputation of Sentosa Golf Club but I certainly was left feeling like a lot of the staff were inattentive and on occasions, even a little bit rude. Whether this was because I was a visitor and not a member I'm not sure but there is room for improvement in my opinion.

While there were a couple of small disappointing aspects to my day, they didn't ruin my day as I enjoyed my 18 holes and I would say generally I was impressed with the club as a golfing destination and would love to play there again next time I am in Singapore!

I can't complain anything. Perfectly cut fairways, roughs and greens. As a club player, propably the course is sloped too easy. After playing almost hundred courses in different countries, the Serapong course is one of the best.

Course in fantastic conditions, very friendly staff and on a busy day they made it happen for me to go off as a single and play in under 3.5 hrs. Great experience
