Qatar golf courses feature the best conditioning found in the region and five-star hospitality standards that rub off from their proximity to many top hotels in Doha. Qatar’s capital city is transforming in real time with new developments and cities being constructed to make Doha a metropolis in advance of hosting the 2022 World Cup.
The founding moment of golf Qatar can be traced back to 1998 when it truly arrived on the world stage, hosting the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters as a second stop on the European Tour’s Middle East swing. A young Scot, Andrew Coltart, won the inaugural event and since then the tournament has hosted a star-studded gathering each year to further cement its place on the golf map.
At the centre of golf in Qatar is Doha Golf Club, which hosts the annual professional tournaments and is designed by Peter Harradine. The property features an 18 hole championship course and a 9 hole academy course to provide a challenge to all skill levels. Golfers coming up the final hole are welcomed by an expansive Arabian-style clubhouse with stunning interiors and a sociable club atmosphere. Everyone knows everyone and you will always be treated as a friend by other members and the hospitable staff.
The Championship course boasts a full length driving range, 8 lakes on the course, and thousands of trees and shrubs that sets it apart from other Qatar golf courses. The vegetation is both native to the region and transplanted from other desert environments around the world like Arizona, USA. The wind is notorious for creeping up in the afternoon that can quickly become a force to be reckoned with when you golf Qatar. Morning tee times, in contrast, tend to be more benign in terms of playing conditions. You can make the choice accordingly.
With a limited selection of tee times to golf in Qatar, its best to book early or consider a weekday tee time to avoid the considerable demand eaten up by members on the weekends. However, this all changes when the temperatures rise, making a highly coveted weekend tee time more attainable from April to October.
Due to great work of the Qatar golf courses governing body association, a thriving community of local nationals are starting to pickup the sport. This makes the potential of a young golf Qatar champion rising the global golf rankings in the future a distinct possibility. The new Qatar International Golf Club is taking this mandate one step further with a vision to leverage the sport as a platform to develop the youth of the country. Instilling in participants good values of the sport like honesty, hard work, and focus is the recipe authorities believe will prepare the next generation of Qatari nationals for what lies ahead.
