Indeed the eventual winner of the 1999 Carnoustie Open Championship, Paul Lawrie came through the final qualifying at Downfield. In 1972 the first ever Scottish Open was held here and Peter Alliss filmed one of his many TV specials from Downfield in the late 70's.
