A glance at the scorecard tells you that the course measures just over 6,000 yards in length from the back tees ( 6090 yards, par 71. 5208 yards, par 72 for the ladies ). Moreover, from a distance, it looks relatively tame with only one serious hill to negotiate. Look a little closer however, and you will soon realise that not only are the fairways extremely narrow and quite undulating but the rough comprises of much gorse, heather and bracken giving rise to all kinds of challenges.
Then there is the wind which whips across the Irish Sea. Yes, a real test of golf, and thanks to architect James Braid who designed the course in 1912, 18 very different holes to savour.
