Beachwood Country Club

Mostly Clear
-°C Today, Forecast: -
A stone's throw from Durban Country Club, the Beachwood Course is a hidden gem offering a superb challenge for the golfer that enjoys a typical Links layout. It is currently rated 33 in the Golf Digest Top 100 Courses in South Africa.

The course was taken over by Durban Country Club in the early 1990’s and underwent some refining and alterations to bring the course closer to Championship standard - offering the discerning golfer an alternative challenge at Beachwood.

An interesting aspect of the course is that it lies at the southern end of Virginia Airport - mainly for small commercial aircraft, private flights, training flights and helicopters - adding an element of excitement to see these small aircraft take off and land directly overhead.

Barring the par 3 second, all the fairways run parallel to one another in a N-NE / S-SW direction. The sixth and ninth fairways both have a dog-leg left to consider whereas the other fairways are all straight. There are 41 bunkers around the greens, and 33 fairway bunkers waiting for wayward shots. Four of the holes are blessed with water features and most fairways are lined with trees.

This course is a very good challenge to the handicap, for the fairways are narrow and long, and require precision tee shots and lay-ups. The course is maintained with the same diligence and care as that of the Country Club course.

Signature Hole – Hole 6, par 4

The sixth is one of the most demanding par 4's you will find anywhere. At 410m from the back tee, set high in the dunes, the hole doglegs left, with a stream, bush and water hazard to be negotiated en route to the green.

Greens were in poor condition. The price was cheaper in the same condition before, but this time the price was higher than that time, which is why I chose 6.

The course has suffered damage to the paths and access roads during the recent floods and many of the fairways had pooling water after the previous nights rain. Greens are also quite bad with bald spots on most greens, not sure why as other sections are fine. Carts are fairly old and unreliable although staff was friendly and helpful.

Greens in terrible conditions. Otherwise, a good experience and a lovely course and staff.

Course overall in fairly good condition, most of flood damage repaired. Greens are up-and-down in pace and covering at the moment after hollow tining - hence the lower score. Once greens are sorted out, would rate higher

Course is a very bad state, greens are very un-kept. Half-way house and restaurant is very good.

Green not in the best condition but playable. Food at halfway was good and the green fees very reasonable.

I enjoyed playing here, and found it a good challenge for my skill level. However, they require more signage at some of the tee-locations as these have been moved around due to the floods and its not always clear on where to tee-off from. Otherwise its a good course and will definitely play here again at some point.
